And I wanted us to be the eternal two.

The ones who people spoke of long after we had ceased to live.

I wanted us to be the stuff of fairytales.

The ones who mothers told their children about.

I wanted us to be more than everything we were.

The ones who people saw and awed.

I wanted us to be the kind of love that people scarcely believed in any more.

The ones that teenage girls dreamed to be.

I wanted us to be the eternal two.

But instead, we ended up just being another lost story among the broken hearts.

And I wait, openly and lovingly for those three words to come.

And I wait, silently and patiently for those three words to come.

And I wait, sighing and willing for those three words to come.

And I wait, whispering and exasperated for those three words to come.

And I wait, loudly and nervously for those three words to come.

And I cease to wait, for I have realised those three words that I so longed to hear will never come. They will never fall upon my ears. You will remain silent and cautious, unwilling to admit that I am indeed the one that you have fallen in love with.

It was from afar, the first time my eyes beheld her.

I could just make out the green of her eyes, and hear the faint sound of her laughter.

I was drinking her in, as if I was a dying man in the desert, and she was my last drop of water.

I remember everything of that moment. The angle of the sunlight, the green of the trees, the light wind which lifted the hem of her dress, the soft tap-tap of her shoes against the ground, the curl of her fingers around the bag she held, the gentle hug she gave her companion as they parted ways, and most of all, I remember the way her eyes met mine.

She smiled at me, her perfect little mouth curving at the edges. I was caught off-guard, and barely managed to lift my lips before she was gone. I had missed my moment with the girl who I felt I was destined to know.

And I will never forget the warmth of your breath in my ear as you whispered your secrets to me.

And I will never forget the touch of your lips as you kissed me.

And I will never forget the strength of your arms as you held me through the night.

And I will never forget the gentleness with which you touched me.

And I will never forget the way you loved me, nor the way I loved you back.

I will never forget you, my very first love.
